You have probably stood in a skincare aisle, picked up a $20 serum, and wondered if the $90 one at your esthetician's studio is really any better. It is a fair question, and most of the answers online come from people selling one or the other.

So here is the honest version. We sell professional skincare at The Beauty Jem, and we think it is worth it for the right person, but the reasons are not the ones you usually hear. Let us walk through the three main tiers of skincare, what "medical-grade" really means, and when the price is justified.

The Three Tiers of Skincare

Drugstore Skincare

Drugstore Skincare examples

Drugstore skincare is sold at pharmacies, grocery stores, and big-box retailers. It is made for the widest possible audience, so it tends to be gentle, affordable, and simple. Brands like CeraVe, Cetaphil, Olay, and La Roche-Posay live here, and many dermatologists recommend them for basic cleansing and moisturizing.

Department Store and Specialty Skincare

Department store and specialty skincare is sold at places like Sephora and Shoppers' beauty boutiques. It is often pricier than the drugstore, with more focus on texture, packaging, and trending ingredients. It is still formulated for the general public.

Professional Skincare

Professional Korean Skincare, available at The Beauty Jem

Professional skincare, often called medical-grade or clinical skincare, is sold through estheticians, dermatologists, and clinics rather than retail shelves. It is usually built around specific skin concerns and meant to be used alongside professional guidance. The difference is in how a professional product is formulated, how it is matched to your skin, and who is standing behind the recommendation. That is where the value lives.

What Makes Professional Skincare Worth More

1. It is formulated for a concern, not for everyone

Drugstore products have to work safely for millions of people with no guidance, so they are designed to be as gentle and broadly tolerable as possible.

Professional lines are built with the assumption that someone trained will match the product to your skin. That lets them focus on specific goals like pigmentation, hydration, congestion, or barrier repair, with ingredient combinations chosen to work together rather than to suit everyone.

2. Someone who has looked at your skin is choosing it

This is the part no store can sell you. When you buy skincare at our studio, you are not buying a bottle. You are buying the assessment behind it.

We assess your skin in person and often under magnification. We know whether your oiliness is actually dehydration, whether your "sensitivity" is a stressed barrier, and whether the product you have been using at home is the reason you are breaking out. We know what we used on you during your facial and what will support it at home. And we know what not to combine, so you are not layering two exfoliants and wondering why your skin stings.

Most clients who tell us drugstore products "did not work" were using a decent product for the wrong problem. The product was fine. The guess was wrong.

3. It is designed to work with your treatments

Professional skincare is usually formulated alongside the treatments offered in a studio, so the home routine continues what the facial started. After a Korean Glass Skin Facial, for example, your skin is freshly exfoliated and more receptive, and the products we send home are chosen to hydrate and protect it, not undo the work. A cabinet of products pulled from different brands rarely works that neatly together.

4. Stability and packaging protect what you paid for

Some ingredients, like vitamin C and retinol, break down with light and air. Cleveland Clinic notes that vitamin C serums remain one of the most popular brightening products, but a vitamin C serum in a clear bottle that has been sitting under store lights is not doing much by the time it reaches your face.

Professional lines tend to invest more in stable formulas and protective packaging. Some drugstore brands do this well too, but it is one of the real differences you are paying for.

5. The routine is simpler, so you use less

Cleveland Clinic aesthetician Ashlyn Yanke points out that the more products you use, the higher your chance of irritating your skin. A well-chosen professional routine is usually three to five products used consistently, not ten products used randomly. Many of our clients spend less overall after switching, because they stop buying things that end up half-used in a drawer.

Where Drugstore Skincare Does the Job

For a gentle cleanser, a basic moisturizer, or a daily sunscreen, drugstore options are often excellent. Cleveland Clinic's own barrier care advice is simply to use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, moisturize with something containing ceramides, and wear sunscreen every day. None of that requires a clinic.

Where professional skincare earns its price is when you have a specific goal: fading post-acne marks, managing congestion, building a glow before an event, or repairing a barrier you have over-exfoliated. In those cases, the right product chosen by someone who knows your skin will almost always beat trial and error, and it usually costs less in the long run.

How to Tell If a Professional Product Is Worth It

Whether you buy from us or anywhere else, here is how we would judge it:

  • Did someone assess your skin first? If a product is recommended without anyone looking at your face, the "professional" part is missing.

  • Does it have a clear job? You should know exactly what concern it is for and how it fits with the rest of your routine.

  • Is the packaging protecting the formula? Opaque, airtight packaging is a good sign for anything with vitamin C or retinol.

  • Can you ask questions after you buy it? Stinging, purging, dryness. A professional should be a message away.

  • Is anyone promising miracles? If a product claims to erase wrinkles or cure acne, be skeptical. Real skincare makes steady improvements over weeks and months, not overnight.

How We Do It at The Beauty Jem

We keep our retail selection small on purpose. We only carry products we use in the studio and have seen work on our clients' skin, and we only recommend what fits yours. We would rather send you home with two products you will actually use than a full bag you will not. And if a drugstore cleanser is working for you, we will tell you to keep it.

Our retail products are available for local pickup at our East Vancouver and North Delta studios.
